In August, 1957, a special bond election was held authorizing the county
board to build a facility for the care of the elderly. Construction of the 57
bed unit began on January 25, 1958, with completion December 10th,
1958. The Traverse County Nursing Home admitted the first resident on
January 14, 1959. By November 1, 1959 we were full.
In 1967 an addition was completed to the existing home. This addition
provided needed space for activities, occupational therapy, private visiting room and a beauty shop. An apartment was provided for the superintendent and later turned into two board and care units. Later a day room was turned into a four bed ward and we also added one more bed to a three bed ward to make it a four bed ward bringing our total beds up to 64. We then closed the two board and care units and later downsized our two four bed wards into three bed wards bring our beds down to 60.
In 1995, a new laundry room was added to the North Wing along with a
beautiful addition to our front lobby. Also, in 1995 a resolution was passed
by the board to change the name from Traverse County Nursing Home to
Traverse Care Center.
In 2001 we down sized to 50 beds. Our home is located on 7th Street in
the South Side of Wheaton, Minnesota. The grounds consist of
approximately 6 acres which include flower and vegetable gardens and
Wheatons famous Mallard Duck.
In August of 2003, we began our remodeling and new construction, we are now a 50 bed Skilled Nursing Facility with 26 Private Rooms and 12 Double Rooms. This project was completed in May, 2005.
